Τhe General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (G.S.R.I.) under the MINISTRY OF DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENTS is the main policy maker, programme owner and programme manager concerning the R&D system in Greece and employs about 120 well qualified staff. The primary mission is the design, implementation and monitoring of the National Strategy for Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) and the Launching and funding of research and innovation programs.

G.S.R.I. supports the research activities of both the country's scientific research institutes and those of its productive industry, focusing on areas that are important for the national economy and for the improvement of the quality of life. It contributes to the reinforcement of the country’s research manpower; it supervises and funds 11 very active and successful research and technological centres and 3 Technological Organizations. It represents Greece in relevant institutions of the European Union, OECD and International Research Organizations (CERN, EMBL etc), thus bringing the country's research and technology activities into line with the requirements of the international community. It promotes bilateral and multilateral cooperation with other countries and international organisations. It encourages activities aimed at raising awareness about research and technology issues.

G.S.R.I. has been involved in 40 EU programmes (ERANETS, ERANET PLUS, INCO-NET, OMC-NET type of projects) and has a considerable experience being a full partner in geographic and thematic ERANETs. In this context, it has contributed in the design and implementation of Joint Calls and has funded 54 joint projects in the frame of 19 joint calls of the abovementioned programmes with an approximate amount of 7M€ under the operational programme 2007-2013. GSRI has recently participated in 17 new Joint Calls under different actions like ERANET RUS PLUS, E-RARE, TRANSCAN, EURONANOMED, ERANETMED, COFASP, QUANTERA, FLAG ERA, CHIST ERA, SOLAR ERANET COFUND II, ERAMIN II, Joint Call 2018 of FACCE, SUSAN & ICT-AGRI2, Blue Bioeconomy COFUND, ICT-AGRI-FOOD COFUND, with an approximate amount of 18M€. GSRI has also recently joined ICRAD COFUND Action with the committed amount of 750.000€, as well as the ERA-NET Cofund BiodivClim call with the committed amount of 750.000€. GSRI supports the projects through the new operational programme 2014-2020.  Last but not least GSRI has recently indicated the envisaged participation of Greece in 13 European Partnerships which are currently under preparation.
